"It's more than just volleyball"

CLUB VOLLEYBALL OVERVIEW

USA Volleyball is the national governing body associated with the U.S. Olympic Committee and is responsible for local, regional, national, and international volleyball competition.

Muskego Stars participates in the USA Volleyball within the Badger Region. This is an elite Junior Olympic volleyball club. Our program goal is to put each player in a position to make both the player and the team successful. We also emphasize two characteristics: (1) a strong desire to learn and (2) a positive mental attitude.

Parents need to understand that the Junior Olympic program requires commitment in the form of time, effort and financial resources. We encourage players to participate in activities outside of school and club volleyball BUT we are also seeking athletes who will make a commitment to the team.

The Junior Olympic Program has six age divisions. Muskego Stars current plan is to develop teams in as many divisions as we see interest.  Our 11's team will participate in the 12's division.

* all ages can play up if they make roster *

REGISTRATION: Please use the sign-up-to-play system when registering your athlete. It will generate most of the appropriate paperwork for you for this and other tryouts.

Absolutely no refunds are given so please take this into account when registering your daughter.

GOALS

EXPECTATIONS

  • Have FUN and ENJOY the game.

  • Make it a quality experience.

  • Be a WINNER. Be a CLASS ACT.

  • Be your best athletically and academically.

  • Strive for continuous improvement including each game and within a match.  Remember, improvements can come in small steps.

  • Be disciplined.  Give 100% effort in practice, during the game and in the classroom

  • Represent yourself and the team in a positive fashion.

  • Support and respect your coaches and teammates.

  • Contribute to the total team effort at all times.

  • Deal with conflicts head-on through open communication.

  • Be responsible and honor your commitments.

  • Be honest with yourself, family, teammates and coaches.

  • Learn from your mistakes and handle them positively

  • Never surrender or turn against yourself.  DON’T GIVE UP.

  • Play with pride and poise and PLAY TO WIN.

  • Love the battle, the competition, and the challenge.

  • Academic obligations come first.  Your parents will help us ensure compliance.  NO GRADES, NO PLAY.

  • Attend practices and tournament schedules.  This is "your" and "our" opportunity to succeed.  While involvement in other activities is encouraged, it should not always come at the sacrifice of the team.

  • Participation in tournament play is EARNED not assumed.  Tournament play is directly related to hard work and commitment to our team goals.

  • Do not use practice time as a time to socialize extensively with teammates.

  • Be on time to practice.  This means long hair tied, shoes and kneepads on, and anything else needed for practice or competition.

  • If you know you will miss a practice, communicate this in writing to the coaches or call and leave a message.

  • Notify the coach if you must leave practice at anytime.

TRYOUTS

Tryouts will be no more than two-hour blocks divided by age group. At tryouts, athletes will be assigned a number to wear on their shirt.

The "judges" will score the athletes during volleyball drills.

The tryout fee covers BOTH tryout dates. You may participate in only one of the two tryouts; however, it is in the player's best interest to attend both tryouts. This gives the athletes a second chance to demonstrate their skills. All athletes will receive a phone call the week following the last tryout. Those athletes who did not make the team may register at the Muskego Parks and Recreation Department for an instructional league. This gives all athletes an opportunity to continue to play volleyball and improve their skills.

PARENTS AND THE GAME

Please let the athletes play to the best of their ability and leave what coaching is needed to the coach. This is not intended to squelch spectator enthusiasm. Please do cheer and encourage the actions you like and ignore the mistakes you will surely see. Please do not interfere with your child's coach, especially during play, or do anything else that will detract from the enjoyment your child deserves to get from volleyball.

The referees are in many cases (especially early rounds of play) like most of us, volunteers not professionals. Even our professional referees, participate in USA Volleyball out of love for the game—just like our coaches and players. Every contact made by each team can be judged, an official's decision may not be agreeable to all participants and spectators, but the decision is final. Stating disagreement or shouting derogatory remarks serves no useful purpose, nor do such actions teach respect for authority.

MEDICAL INSURANCE COVERAGE

The Badger medical insurance program provides participant coverage for loss resulting directly from members competing in an approved or sanctioned event. Coverage does not include loss for pre-existing conditions or competing in non-sanctioned events. The coverage extends from the start through the completion of the event, including travel to and from the event.

The medical policy provides $25,000 of excess accidental medical coverage for expenses incurred within one year of the accident. Claims must be filed within 90 days of the accident, however. The policy provides coverage against loss in excess of insurance and is subject to a $250 per claim deductible. If no other collective medical insurance is available, the loss is subject to a $1,000 deductible. All coverage is subject to the plan's general limitations and exclusions.

If a player has sustained an injury in practice or game, the coach should be alerted as soon as possible. If any injury appears serious enough to require a doctor, medical care should be sought immediately. Parents should make a claim of medical bills to the family's medical coverage or through their employer's group policy. Whenever parents incur expenses, request a claim form from the Club President. Carefully follow the instructions on the club form.

THE "CLUB" BENEFIT

This program provides a great number of opportunities for its members besides skill development…travel, personal development, friendships, physical conditioning, and self-discipline. We will provide coaches that support our goals and philosophies with the best interest of each player in mind.

THE JUNIOR OLYMPIC SEASON

The season runs from January to the beginning of May. The season may extend into June if the team votes to enter into out-of-state tournaments or qualifies for Nationals. Teams may play in such events if voted on by team. Teams participating in such tournaments may be asked for additional fee’s to be paid.

CLUB FEE

*The club membership fees are usually around $500.  That includes: equipment, uniforms (1 pair of shorts and 2 shirts), USA Volleyball registration, regional tournament entry fees, insurance, coaches' stipend, practice expenses and other costs of administration. If a team wishes to participate in additional tournaments/nationals players may be charged an additional fee.

Each participant will pay $500 due by early January.

Each participate will purchase a club specified volleyball to be used by the team during practice and tournaments. The ball is to carried by the player to/from practice and tournaments.  The player will keep their balls at the end of the season.

Additional expenses are based upon our own travel costs to and from tournaments and the possibility of out-of-state tournament entries, which depends on a vote of the team parents.

A minimum of eight (8) players must commit for a team to participate in out-of-state tournaments.

SCORE KEEPING/REFEREEING CLINIC

All players are required to attend a scorekeeping and a referee clinic--time and date to be announced. If players don't attend this clinic, they will be required to go to a clinic some place else at the expense of player or player's legal guardian.

UNIFORMS & EQUIPMENT

The club will provide each athlete with two numbered jersey's, one pair of compression shorts.

Players provide their own shoes, kneepads, and water bottles. A player cannot wear jewelry, watches, or any other hard object including a plastic cast or splint. Absolutely no gum is allowed at practice or competition. Players will be given the opportunity to purchase other club items such as club bags, sweat shirts or other.

Junior Olympic players will receive a USA Volleyball membership card and a year's subscription to the USA Volleyball national and regional newsletters.

PRACTICE INFORMATION AND RULES

It is important that the players attend practice…that is where individual and team skills and strategies are taught. Providing transportation is not the coach's responsibility. Players should make every effort to respect the facilities. Misuse of the facilities should be brought to the attention of the coaches and subsequently the parents. It is important to arrive at practice early so that you can get your shoes and knee pads on, help set up the nets and be ready to start on time. Each coach may have additional practice rules; be sure to adhere to them.

Players are expected to make a commitment to attend practices and competitions as scheduled by the coaching staff. If a player is sick, she needs to contact the coach to explain her absence. If there is an unexcused absence (i.e. no notification or not showing up) or several missed practices, the player can expect reduced playing time.

TOURNAMENT INFORMATION

The program relies on the help of parents to transport their children to and from tournaments. Parents transporting any player(s) other than their own must fill out a volunteer form. USA Volleyball Junior Olympics competitions are generally held on a Saturday or Sunday with all-day tournaments. Round robin play begins about 8:00 a.m., single elimination play for the top finishers begins in the late afternoon and finals are in the early evening. Before leaving a tournament site, it is absolutely necessary to clean up our area. Tournament Directors will fine teams for messes left behind. Any fines will be passed on to team members and their parents.

Updated schedules for this season's competition are made available to each player from their coach. STARTING TIME FOR A TOURNAMENT CAN COME AS LATE AS THE DAY BEFORE THE EVENT. Any changes or updates will be relayed to the players by the team's coach.

When inclement weather threatens a trip, the decision to travel will be made by the coach and directors who will notify the team as soon as possible.
